Will Online Shopping Replace Actual Shopping?

March 20th, 2012

We can almost buy anything online. Cars, music, groceries, pets, books, tools, and even some of the more involved things like mortgage consultation, financial advising and even Amigo Energy Midland services – we can buy so much online these days but have you ever wondered whether or not online shopping could one day replace actual shopping? Doesn’t seem like it, right? I mean, leaving our homes and shopping is something that we as Americans have been doing since, pretty much, the birth of this nation, but it is certainly a valid question to bring up nonetheless.

Recently a number of video rental chains have suffered the effects of bankruptcy and many people attribute this to the growing use of online shopping services to either rent or purchase movies and shows. Borders, a well-known and successful bookselling chain for many years, recently went out of business and people attributed the fall of this mighty chain to the success of Barnes and Noble and Amazon with their online book services. Let’s face it, online shopping and the online marketplace, while perhaps not being the only reason, were certainly pivotal in the toppling of these businesses and as we continue to do more of our shopping online, more and more businesses are suffering as a result.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like any of this is likely to change – not when you consider how much more convenient it is to shop from home. There is no hassle and no travel when you shop from home – most of the time you just point and click. However, not EVERYTHING can be bought online (yet), and while real actual shopping might not be completely phased out, it is certainly proving unnecessary.
